The beautiful Bohemian Vest can become a disaster if you choose to use the wrong types of yarns. I would like to stress the importance of choosing the correct yarn in your pattern.
The bohemian vest is made using 100% Dralon Microfiber. This fiber is soft and very forgiving and is what makes the vest so beautiful.
Not everyone can find the yarns specified in patterns but it is always a good choice to get as close as possible to the yarn weight. If you stray from the recommended fibers, your finished project will be one hot mess. Forgive me, I should not say it so bluntly, but to avoid the word “JUNKY” I decided to just go with “HOT MESS”. Some may not agree with me which is fine, but I would rather see my vest crocheted using the appropriate yarns giving it the appearance it well deserves.
As you can see in the comparison pictures below, the acrylic yarns do not work well when making the Bohemian Vest. The cheaper super saver acrylics and acrylic sock yarns make the vest look like a fashion fall back from the 50’s. The photo below of the blue hues, is exactly what the cheap acrylic yarn looks like once you get moving on your project, BIG and BULKY.
Well lets just say, Try not to use these types of yarns! OUCH.....the outcome will definitely hurt. The correct yarn used to make this is called Deborah Norville serenity garden yarn, which is a thin 3 ply cotton dralon fiber. You will be able to see the difference in the comparison photo below. The stitches on the right work a bit tighter because of the cotton texture. The acrylic on the left makes large stitches and changes the entire appearance of the piece altogether.

There are many other Bohemian vests that have been crocheted using acrylic yarns, but using a better quality of yarn like Red Heart- “Boutique Unforgettable” works out like a treasure and gives the vest another unique look all in itself.
You can see in the photo to the left, this yarn is "Caron Simply Soft Light" and the model's photo is a beautiful and stunning depiction of the vest as it should be portrayed using this heavier yarn.
The Final Rule of Thumb- Do not settle for cheaper yarns when you tackle projects, try to get as close to the yarn the pattern is suggesting.
